System Benefits of Marine Energy - Data Workshop, 10th of June 2020

Posted 2020-06-02 in News

IEA OES will facilitate an online workshop that brings together research projects from around the world investigating the potential system benefits of integrating marine energy into established power systems.

A diverse mix of renewable generation technologies will be necessary to meet ambitious global carbon reduction targets while meeting the ‘energy trilemma’ conditions of sustainability, affordability and security of supply. Ocean energy, with a large potential global resource and locational offsetting with wind and solar resource, could play a key role in meeting these targets whilst maintaining system reliability. However, very little quantitative evidence has been produced to explore the additional benefits that ocean energy can bring to power systems and markets alongside the deployment of other, more developed, stochastic renewable generation technologies.

This online workshop, facilitated by the IEA OES, brings together research projects from around the world investigating the potential system benefits of integrating marine energy into established power systems. The workshop focuses on data requirements for such studies, accessibility of data on marine energy resource, power conversion curves/matrices, generation and demand.  The discussion will also include further opportunities for sharing data, methodologies and lessons learnt and opportunities for future collaboration between participants.

The workshop will take place on the 10th June 2020. Researchers interested in participating in this workshop can contact Henry Jeffrey (henry.jeffrey@ed.ac.uk) and
Shona Pennock (shona.pennock@ed.ac.uk) at the University of Edinburgh for further details.
The OES is organised under the auspices of the International Energy Agency (IEA) but is functionally and legally autonomous. Views, findings and publications of the OES do not necessarily represent the views or policies of the IEA Secretariat or its individual member countries.
