Workshop at UMERC-OREC 2025 to Address Environmental Effects of Off-Grid Marine Energy

Posted 2025-06-03 in News

OES-Environmental and PNNL will deliver a workshop on the Environmental Effects of Off-grid Marine Energy at UMERC-OREC 2025, to be held in Corvallis, Oregon, USA.

Ocean Energy Systems – Environmental (OES-Environmental) and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) are partnering to deliver a workshop on the Environmental Effects of Off-grid Marine Energy at UMERC-OREC 2025, to be held in Corvallis, Oregon, USA.

While much of the global research on marine renewable energy has focused on understanding environmental effects for large, utility-scale devices, many near- and long-term applications will rely on smaller-scale, off-grid solutions. These include powering remote coastal and island communities, aquaculture operations, ocean observations, and navigation markers.

This interactive workshop will provide background on off-grid marine energy uses and focus on case studies that explore environmental considerations for:
  • Providing power for a remote coastal community using tidal energy
  • Providing power for an island community using wave energy
  • Powering aquaculture operations
  • Supporting offshore ocean observations
Participants will collaborate to identify expected environmental effects, key data gaps, and critical information needed to streamline permitting for these smaller, yet vital, marine energy projects.

OES-Environmental invites all stakeholders interested in advancing sustainable, off-grid marine energy to participate in this engaging and forward-thinking session.
