OES-Environmental Launches Survey on MRE Environmental Effects in Tropical and Subtropical Countries

Posted 2026-05-22 in News

The survey aims to collect information on projects, research and monitoring activities to improve understanding of marine renewable energy interactions with tropical and subtropical ecosystems.

Ocean energy is under development in many parts of the world, however, studies examining its environmental effects have primarily focused on deployments in temperate and Northern Hemisphere countries.

To help address this gap, OES-Environmental has launched a survey to collect existing information on marine renewable energy in tropical and subtropical countries, including active or planned projects, research, monitoring and modelling activities, relevant literature, and expert contacts.

The survey focuses on key areas of uncertainty, including collision risk, underwater noise, electromagnetic fields, habitat changes, oceanographic changes, entanglement and displacement.

Stakeholders, researchers, project developers, regulators and organisations with relevant information are invited to contribute.

Take the survey here.
The OES is organised under the auspices of the International Energy Agency (IEA) but is functionally and legally autonomous. Views, findings and publications of the OES do not necessarily represent the views or policies of the IEA Secretariat or its individual member countries.
