The Hawai Marine Energy Center (HMEC) has announced a series of short courses designed to support education and workforce development in marine renewable energy.
The first course, Introduction to Marine Energy, will take place from 17–21 August 2026 at the University of Hawai?i at M?noa, O?ahu. Designed for participants with little or no prior experience, including advanced high school students, college students and professionals, the course will introduce core concepts in marine energy, with a particular focus on wave energy and Pacific Island contexts.
Participants will take part in lectures, numerical modelling, laboratory activities, and nearshore and offshore field experiences. There is no registration fee, and travel support is expected to be available for selected participants. Applications are open until 15 June 2026.
HMEC has also announced an upcoming Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion short course, tentatively scheduled for 4–8 January 2027, with applications expected to open soon. The course will explore OTEC from first principles to real-world deployment, including system design, thermodynamics, engineering challenges, economic feasibility, environmental considerations and permitting pathways.
