Supporting the next generation of ocean energy researchers

The Institute of Ocean Energy at Saga University (IOES) hosted the 12th Program of International Platform on Ocean Energy for Young Researchers, that took place from 7 to 12 November 2025. This annual event invites the next generation of ocean energy scientists and engineers to connect, share research, and build global academic networks around marine renewable energy.

The program is organised by the Institute of Ocean Energy, a joint usage/research centre at Saga University, dedicated to advancing ocean energy solutions to confront global environmental challenges.

Who Participates?
Young researchers under 36 years old - including master’s or doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, research associates, lecturers, and assistant professors - were invited to apply as presenters. IOES supports all travel, transport and accommodation costs for successful applicants who attend in person in Japan, fostering participation from a diverse international cohort.
The event also offers online attendance, open to participants worldwide for special lectures, allowing broader engagement beyond the physical venue.

Programme Highlights
Over six days, participants engage in:
  • facility tours and introductory discussions,
  • keynote and special lectures,
  • peer research presentations,
  • industrial site visits including shipbuilding and next-generation energy parks,
  • awards and networking sessions,
  • and a closing ceremony celebrating collaboration and innovation.
The programme emphasises both academic excellence and international dialogue, creating opportunities for early-career scientists to enhance their research skills, gain visibility, and develop partnerships across borders.

This year’s edition continues a tradition of over a decade of annual exchange, building on similar programmes dating back to 2015.
